Watch models for Agenhor

Sector: Luxury watchmaking

Period: 2012-2023

Client: Agenhor SA (manufacturer of watch complications)

Background

Agenhor is a manufacture specializing in the development of innovative watch complications (jumping displays, perpetual calendars, retrograde mechanisms). They design movements for several prestigious brands and need educational models to present their technical innovations to clients and partners.

My role: turning their mechanical concepts into visual models enlarged 15 to 20 times, sometimes with a free hand on the overall shape of the model.

Challenge

Technical challenge:

  • Complex complications: jumping mechanisms, retrograde systems and unconventional displays require in-depth understanding before they can be enlarged
  • 15-20X enlargement, with clearances, tolerances and mechanical behavior recalculated
  • Demonstrated functionality: the model must show the actual movement of the complication

Creative challenge:

  • Sometimes a free hand on the shape: open design of the display structure
  • Showcasing the technical innovation while keeping it easy to read
  • Balancing technical and aesthetic aspects

Solution

Process:

  1. Analysis of the technical drawings supplied by Agenhor
  2. Concept definition: discussion of the key elements to highlight, approval of the artistic direction when given a free hand
  3. 3D design: complete redesign, adapted to scale, and choice of the display structure
  4. Choice of materials: Plexiglas (clear/colored), anodized aluminum, stainless steel
  5. Multi-technique fabrication: laser cutting, CNC milling, turning, hand assembly
  6. Testing and adjustments: validating the mechanical operation
  7. Finishing and delivery: mounting on a base, with documentation

Specifics:

  • More creative freedom on some projects
  • Focus on technical innovation (unique complications)
  • Close collaboration with Agenhor's development team

Result

Deliverables:

  • Large-scale working models (30-50 cm depending on complexity)
  • Mounted on custom display bases
  • Real-time demonstration of the mechanism
  • Technical documentation

Impact:

  • Presentation tools for watchmaking clients and partners
  • Communication support to demonstrate technical innovation
  • Showcasing patents and proprietary developments
