Custom Harley Davidson Fat Boy build — Rescue & chicano transformation
Field: Motorcycle customization / Mechanics / Custom design
Period: 2012 (1-month build)
Client: Private commission (Geneva)
Model: Harley Davidson Fat Boy 2012
Background
In 2012, a client in Geneva had bought a brand-new Harley Davidson Fat Boy to have it customized. He had entrusted it to two specialist workshops in Geneva, which stripped the bike down completely... and then did nothing concrete for months.
The client was desperate: his new bike sat in pieces in cardboard boxes, with no progress and no communication.
A mutual friend who knew my custom builds told me: "You have to take over my buddy's bike."
Mission: Take over a Fat Boy stripped down to its parts and deliver a complete chicano-style custom in 1 month.
Problem
Starting point:
- Fat Boy 2012 completely disassembled in boxes
- Parts scattered, no disassembly documentation
- A client who had lost confidence after months of waiting
- Tight deadline: 1 month to redo everything
Technical challenge:
- Complete reassembly of a bike taken apart by someone else
- Checking the condition of every part (fasteners, wiring, fluids)
- Fitting custom parts (XXL fenders, monkey bar, etc.)
- De-chroming many parts (switching to black)
- Integrating the chicano design seamlessly
Aesthetic challenge:
- The client wanted a pure chicano style: big fenders, monkey bar, selective chrome, flame paint job
- Coordination with a specialist painter for the custom design
Solution
Phase 1: Recovery & inventory
Recovering the bike:
- Collecting the boxes from the workshops that had given up
- Full inventory of the parts
- Checking the mechanical condition (engine, transmission, suspension)
Phase 2: Designing the chicano style
Custom design elements:
- XXL fenders front and rear (chicano low rider style)
- Monkey bar (high ape hanger–style handlebars)
- Silver flame paint job (designed by a specialist painter)
- Selective chrome: some parts stay chrome, others go black
- De-chroming: grips, end caps, some engine parts → matte black
Custom parts added:
- Custom exhausts
- Low custom seat
- Modified wheels
- Adapted lighting
Phase 3: Reassembly & fitting
Mechanics:
- Complete reassembly of the engine, transmission and suspension
- Fluids checked/replaced
- Electrical wiring inspected
- Mechanical tests (compression, leak-tightness, braking)
Fitting the custom parts:
- Mounting the XXL fenders (adapted brackets)
- Installing the monkey bar (extended cables, adapted controls)
- De-chroming parts (sandblasting, matte black paint)
- Mounting the custom exhausts
Paint & finishing:
- Bodywork entrusted to the specialist painter
- Silver flame design on a black base
- Contrasting chrome/black finishes
Phase 4: Delivery
Total time: 1 month (reassembly + fitting + paint + tests)
Result: A complete chicano-style custom Fat Boy, delivered turnkey to the client.
Results
Deliverable:
- Harley Davidson Fat Boy 2012 transformed into a chicano custom
- Style: low rider, XXL fenders, monkey bar, silver flames
- Professional custom paint job
- Selective chrome + de-chromed parts
- Running, road-legal bike, delivered in 1 month
Impact for the client:
- Bike rescued: from a pile of abandoned parts → a complete, working custom
- Deadline met: 1 month vs months of waiting at the previous workshops
- Pure chicano style: exactly what the client wanted
- Satisfied client, bike in use
This project demonstrates:
- The ability to rescue a project others had botched
- Complete reassembly of a bike taken apart without documentation
- Multi-trade coordination: mechanics, custom paint, parts fitting
- Meeting deadlines under pressure (1 month)
- High-end customization: a coherent, polished chicano style
